How to Play Spades

You and Partner (North) play against West and East. Spades are always trump.

Bidding: each player bids how many of the 13 tricks they'll win. Bid Nil to bet you'll win zero tricks (+100 if you succeed, -100 if you don't).

Playing: follow the led suit if you can. Spades can't lead a trick until a spade has been played ("broken"), unless it's all you have. Highest card of the led suit wins — unless someone plays a spade, then the highest spade wins.

Scoring: if your team makes its combined bid, you score bid×10 plus 1 point per extra trick ("bag"). Miss your bid and you lose bid×10. Every 10 bags costs your team 100 points. First team to 200 wins.
