Every piece moves in its own way, and the game rewards patience: controlling the center, developing your pieces early and keeping your king safe matter more than any single trick. Games end in checkmate, a draw or a resignation, so a match can last a few minutes or turn into a long, careful battle.
Select a piece, then select the square you want to move it to. White moves first and the players take turns. Capture an enemy piece by moving onto its square. When a king is attacked it is in check and you must deal with the threat immediately. Checkmate, where the king is attacked and cannot escape, ends the game.

Bring your knights and bishops out before you start attacking, and castle early so your king is tucked away. Before every move, ask what your opponent's last move is threatening. Do not move the same piece twice in the opening without a good reason. When you are ahead in material, trade pieces to simplify the game.
